Engineered wood is real timber on a stable core, so it behaves in a way solid wood will not in a Victorian Smethwick terrace with variable heat and humidity. It still has to be acclimatised in the room before it goes down, and that is the step people skip.
Engineered board is real timber on a stable core, so it copes with a Smethwick terrace far better than solid wood would. It is left in the room to acclimatise before fitting, laid over a level base with the correct expansion gap, and finished with beading and proper thresholds at every doorway. Rushing the acclimatisation is what makes a wood floor gap in January.
Timber moves with the humidity of the room it lives in. A few days acclimatising means it settles before it is fixed, rather than shrinking afterwards and leaving gaps. It is the most commonly skipped step in the trade.

Engineered can, solid generally cannot. There are limits on thickness and on how fast you bring the heat up, and we will set that out before fitting.
